When you search for a plumber, electrician or house cleaner on Google, you often see two kinds of ads at the top. First, a few business cards with a green badge and star ratings. Then, below them, regular text ads that look like search results. Those are Local Services Ads and Google Search ads, and they work very differently.
I run both types of campaigns for local service businesses. In this guide I’ll compare Local Services Ads vs Google Ads in plain terms: how you pay, where you show up, how much control you get and which one suits your business.
Quick answer: Local Services Ads charge per lead, show at the very top with a Google trust badge and need little setup once you’re verified, but give you almost no control over keywords or ad text. Google Search ads charge per click and need more management, but let you choose keywords, write ads, pick landing pages and target specific services. Many local businesses get the best results by running both.
What Are Local Services Ads?
Local Services Ads (LSAs) are Google’s pay-per-lead ads for local businesses such as plumbers, roofers, electricians, cleaners, movers and many more. According to Google’s Local Services Ads help page, you “pay only for leads related to your business and the services you offer.” A lead is a call or message sent through your ad.
Businesses that pass Google’s screening can earn the Google Verified badge, which Google says “helps inspire confidence by signaling to consumers that your business has passed Google’s proprietary screening process.” The checks depend on your category and area, but usually include licenses, business registration, insurance and reviews.
What Are Google Search Ads?
Google Search ads are the classic text ads that appear for the keywords you choose. You write the headlines and descriptions, choose where each ad sends people and pay each time someone clicks. They’re managed in Google Ads, with full control over keywords, negative keywords, bids, budgets, schedules and locations.

Pros and Cons of Local Services Ads
Pros:
- You pay per lead, not per click, so you don’t pay for people who click and leave
- The top position and Google Verified badge build trust quickly
- Reviews show directly on your ad
- Little ongoing management once you’re set up
- Google automatically reviews charged leads. Its lead credits page says low-quality leads “may be issued credits automatically”, usually within 30 days
Cons:
- Very little control over which searches trigger your ad
- No custom ad text or landing pages
- Verification can take time
- Google says it no longer gives automatic credits for “job type not serviced” or “geo not serviced” leads, so keep your service list and area accurate
- Your ranking depends partly on how you handle leads. Google warns that if you “regularly fail to answer calls or respond to messages, your ad ranking may be affected”
Pros and Cons of Google Search Ads
Pros:
- Full control over keywords, ad text, bids and budget
- Promote specific high-value services, such as roof replacement or dental implants
- Send people to landing pages built to convert
- Launch in a day, without a long verification process
Cons:
- You pay for every click, including people who don’t call
- Needs regular work: search terms, negative keywords and testing
- Poor setup wastes money fast. If that sounds familiar, read why your Google Ads may not be converting
Which One Should You Choose?
Choose Local Services Ads if:
- You offer a common local service in an eligible category
- You want steady calls without managing ads every week
- You have good reviews and can answer the phone quickly
Choose Google Search ads if:
- You want to promote specific or high-value services
- You have a strong landing page and a clear offer
- Your category isn’t eligible for Local Services Ads
- You want to test offers, locations or new services
Run both if:
- You want to show up in more than one spot at the top of Google
- You want LSA’s trusted calls plus Search ads for your most profitable jobs
In my experience, running both works best for most home service businesses. LSAs bring simple, trusted calls, while Search ads fill the gaps with the services and areas you want most. You can see how this plays out by industry in my guides to Google Ads for roofers and Google Ads for dentists.
How to Get the Most from Local Services Ads
- Keep your services and service area accurate, so you only get leads you can take
- Answer calls quickly and reply to messages fast
- Collect reviews steadily, because they appear right on your ad
- Keep your business hours up to date
- Mark leads as booked or not booked, so you can see what’s working
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Local Services Ads and Google Ads?
Local Services Ads charge per lead, appear at the very top of Google with a trust badge and use your profile instead of custom ads. Google Search ads charge per click, appear below them and give you full control over keywords, ad text and landing pages. Both are managed within Google’s advertising tools.
Are Local Services Ads cheaper than Google Ads?
Not always. You pay per lead instead of per click, so you don’t pay for clicks that go nowhere. But lead prices vary by service and area, and you have less control over lead quality. Compare cost per booked job from each channel over a few months to see which is cheaper for you.
Do I need to be verified to run Local Services Ads?
You need to meet Google’s requirements for your category and area, such as licenses or business registration and, for some categories, reviews and insurance. Businesses that pass the full screening can show the Google Verified badge, which helps build trust with customers.
Can I run Local Services Ads and Google Search ads at the same time?
Yes, and many local businesses do. Running both can put you in two spots at the top of the results. Local Services Ads bring trusted calls, while Search ads let you target specific services, offers and areas with your own landing pages.
What happens if I get a bad lead from Local Services Ads?
Google reassesses charged leads and may issue credits automatically for low-quality ones, usually within 30 days. It no longer credits leads for jobs or areas you don’t serve, so keeping your service list and area accurate is the best way to avoid paying for poor leads.
Final Thoughts
The Local Services Ads vs Google Ads decision isn’t really either-or. LSAs give you trusted, pay-per-lead calls with little work, while Search ads give you control to chase the jobs you want most. Start with the one that fits your business today, and add the other when you’re ready to grow.
