Your ads are getting clicks. The budget is being spent every day. But the phone isn’t ringing, the forms aren’t coming in and Google Ads shows zero conversions. It’s frustrating, and it’s one of the most common questions I get from business owners.

I audit and manage Google Ads accounts for service businesses. When someone asks me “why are my Google Ads not converting?”, the answer is almost always one of the ten problems below. Work through them in order, because the first few are the most common and the easiest to fix.

Quick answer: Google Ads usually don’t convert because conversion tracking is broken, the ads show for the wrong searches, location settings are too wide, or the landing page doesn’t match the ad. Check tracking first, then your search terms report, location settings and landing page. Offer, bidding, ad schedule and slow follow-up are the next things to check.

First, Is Your Conversion Rate Really Low?

For context, WordStream’s 2025 Google Ads benchmarks, based on more than 16,000 campaigns, put the average conversion rate at 7.52% across all industries. Some industries sit well above that, such as dentists at 9.08%.

If you’re getting 100 clicks and no conversions, something is clearly wrong. That’s usually the moment people start asking, “Why are my Google Ads not converting?” If you’re getting 3%, you may just need a few improvements. Either way, the fixes below apply.

1. Conversion Tracking Isn’t Working

This is the first thing I check, because it’s more common than you’d think. Sometimes the ads are working fine, but Google isn’t recording the results. Calls and form fills happen, and your account still shows zero.

Check that:

  • Conversion actions are set up for calls, form submissions and bookings
  • Each conversion action shows as recording, not inactive or unverified
  • Your thank-you page or form event actually fires the tag
  • Calls from ads and calls from your website are both tracked

Google’s guide to conversion measurement explains the setup. A quick test: submit your own form and see whether it appears in the account within a day.

2. Your Ads Show for the Wrong Searches

Open your search terms report. Google explains in its search terms report guide that it shows the actual searches that triggered your ads, which are often different from your keywords.

You’ll often find searches like job applications, DIY tutorials, competitors’ names or services you don’t offer. Add them as negative keywords, and review the report every week. Broad match keywords without good negatives are one of the biggest sources of wasted spend.

3. Your Location Settings Are Too Wide

Google offers two location options: people who are in or regularly in your target area, and people who are in it or have shown interest in it. Google’s location targeting guide recommends the broader “presence or interest” option for many Search campaigns.

For local service businesses, though, someone in another state researching your town can’t hire you. In my experience, plumbers, cleaners, roofers and dentists usually get better leads by targeting only people who are in or regularly in their service area. Check where your clicks come from in the location report.

4. The Landing Page Doesn’t Match the Ad

If your ad says “Emergency water heater repair” and the click lands on your homepage, many people leave. Each ad group should send clicks to a page about that exact service.

Google’s Quality Score guide lists landing page experience as one of its three parts, along with expected click-through rate and ad relevance. A good landing page:

  • Repeats the service and location from the ad in its headline
  • Shows a phone number and a short form without scrolling
  • Loads quickly on a phone
  • Includes reviews, guarantees and photos of real work

If your pages don’t do this, a dedicated landing page can often lift conversions more than any bidding change.

5. The Page Is Slow or Broken on Mobile

Most local searches happen on phones. Open your landing page on your own phone and try to call or submit the form. Look for slow loading, buttons that are hard to tap, forms that don’t submit and pop-ups that cover the page. Fix anything that gets in the way.

6. Your Offer Doesn’t Stand Out

Searchers compare you with three or four other ads on the same page. If yours says the same thing as everyone else, you’ll get clicks from comparison shoppers who don’t choose you. Give people a reason to pick you: a clear price or starting price, a same-day service promise, a free inspection or a strong guarantee.

7. Your Ads Don’t Match Search Intent

Someone searching “roof repair cost” is researching. Someone searching “roof repair near me” wants help now. Group keywords by intent, write ads that answer each intent and bid more on the high-intent searches that bring calls.

8. Your Bidding Strategy Has Too Little Data

Smart bidding strategies like Maximize Conversions or target cost per acquisition rely on conversion data. If tracking is broken or you only get a few conversions a month, the system has little to learn from. Fix tracking first, and consider starting with a simpler strategy until you have steady conversion data.

9. Nobody Answers When the Ads Run

Ads running at night or on weekends when no one picks up the phone waste money and lose leads. Check your ad schedule report, and either pause ads when you can’t answer or make sure calls and forms get a fast reply.

10. Leads Come In, but Follow-Up Is Slow

Sometimes the ads do convert, but the leads don’t turn into customers. If forms get a reply the next day, or calls go to voicemail, people book with someone else. Reply to form leads within minutes and track which leads become paying customers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my Google Ads getting clicks but no conversions?

The most common causes are broken conversion tracking, irrelevant search terms, location settings that are too wide and landing pages that don’t match the ad. Check tracking first by submitting a test form, then review your search terms report and landing page on a phone.

How do I know if my Google Ads conversion tracking is working?

Check each conversion action’s status in the Goals section of your account. Then submit a test form or make a test call through your ad or website and confirm it’s recorded within a day. If nothing appears, the tag or setup needs fixing.

What is a good conversion rate for Google Ads?

WordStream’s 2025 data puts the average at 7.52% across all industries, with some industries like dentists above 9%. Compare yourself with your industry and your own past results. A rate below 2% usually means something in the account or landing page needs work.

How long should I wait before judging Google Ads results?

Give a new campaign at least two to four weeks and enough clicks to judge, often a hundred or more. Before that, results can swing a lot. But if you see many clicks and zero conversions in the first week, check tracking and search terms right away.

Should I hire someone to fix my Google Ads?

If you’ve checked tracking, search terms, location settings and landing pages and results are still poor, an expert audit can save money quickly. A specialist can spot wasted spend and setup problems that are easy to miss when you’re running a business.

Final Thoughts

When you ask “why are my Google Ads not converting?”, start with the basics: tracking, search terms, location settings and landing pages. Most accounts improve a lot once those four are fixed. Then work on your offer, bidding, ad schedule and follow-up.
